Driver Airbag - Function - GF91.60-P-4001-02Q
Schematic procedure
The figures are illustrations of the principle and are not vehicle-specific
- Depending upon the severity of the impact the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an electrical ignition pulse to the gas generator's driver airbag ignition squib 1 (R12/13) and driver airbag ignition squib 2 (R12/14). The type of crash involved determines whether the detonators are ignited simultaneously or in stages.
- The ignition squibs then ignite the solid fuel in the inflator. When the solid fuel burns it generates a gas that flows "explosively" under high pressure through a filter and into the interior of the airbag folded compactly on top of the inflator.
- The bag folded on top of the gas generator then inflates, forcing open the steering wheel hub cover along a predetermined fracture point.
- As more gas enters the bag, it pushes through the opening and fills to maximum volume.
- The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 45 msec.
- It begins to deflate immediately after attaining maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
After a triggering stage has been activated, the unit must be disposed of accordingly. In Germany disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System "MeRSy". The corresponding legal requirements should be observed in all other countries.
