The intake manifold switchover optimizes the engine torque in the partial load range by modifying the intake routes (intake lengths).
The vibration response of the intake air at various operating conditions is used specifically to achieve internal charging.
To do this, the intake manifold switchover valve (Y22/6) is actuated independently of the engine load and engine speed by the ME control unit (N3/10) using a PWM signal.
During actuation, the intake manifold switchover vacuum capsule (22/6) is discharged with vacuum pressure via the variable intake manifold switchover valve and the variable flaps in the intake manifold (22) are closed via a linkage. The result is an extension of the intake route in the variable intake manifold.
The variable intake manifold switchover valve is actuated at:
- Engine load < 50 %
- Engine speed < 1750/min < 3900/min
When the engine is started and at low engine speeds the variable flaps are always open.
In de-energized status the variable flaps are opened by spring force.
