Controller Area Network (CAN)

The engine control module, electronic accelerator control module or cruise control/idle speed control module, and diagnostic module (California Only) are linked by CAN. All control modules are networked in parallel by 2 wires.

Data is exchanged continuously in the form of information blocks. Transmissions from one control module are received by all other control modules. Control modules only interpret information which is required by that specific control module. CAN deletes any need for redundant sensors.
