IMPORTANT The illustration shows the chronological sequence of side-bag deployment after a heavy side impact.

The times that are shown are merely to indicate the extremely rapid speed at which the side-bag is inflated and deflated.

The values are therefore only examples and not generally valid in the sense of a specification or mandatory requirement.

Side impact (shown on model 210)

If the driver side-bag sensor (A53) or the front passenger side-bag sensor (A54) detects a side impact, the relevant crash data are sent to the emergency tensioning retractor (ETR) with airbag (AB) control unit (N2/2).

The emergency tensioning retractor (ETR) with airbag (AB) control unit (N2/2) checks the plausibility of the signal and if appropriate activates the squibs for the side-bag at the affected side of the vehicle.

Front passenger seat occupancy

In vehicles with seat occupied recognition or automatic child seat recognition, the occupancy status of the front passenger seat is recorded.

If the front passenger seat is not  occupied or a child seat is not  detected the side-bag  at the passenger-side will not  activate.
