SERVICE INFORMATION
25/96-1 RECALLS AND SERVICE CAMPAIGNS: WHEN REPAIRING ANY CAR, ALWAYS CHECK THE VEHICLE MASTER INQUIRY FOR OPEN CAMPAIGNS
25/96-5 GROUP 07 - ME INJECTION SYSTEM: On Model Year 1996 S-Class vehicles with ME1.0 injection system (S420/500 and S600) and on Model Year 1997 S-Class and E-Class with ME1.0 (S420/500 and S600 and E420) and ME2.1 injection system (S320 and E320), the OBD system will test for leaks in the fuel evaporator system. If the fuel cap is not closed tightly after refueling, the OBD system will interpret this as a leak in the system and store it as a fault. As a result, the low fuel level lamp(s) will start flashing. If the cap is not secured, a leak will be detected again during the next test cycle and the check engine light will illuminate. The same can occur if the engine is left idling during refueling and conditions are met for a leak test; the system will detect a leak and the low fuel level lamp(s) will start flashing. If during the next test cycle no leak is detected (i.e., the fuel cap has been secured tightly), the low fuel level lamp(s) will not be flashing. If the check engine light is illuminated due to a leak detected in the second test, it will be turned off after the system has not registered a leak in the next three tests (fuel cap closed tightly after check engine light illuminated). The stored code will be erased from the OBD system if the fault is not registered during the next 40 tests.
