DTC 82: TCS-ECM Communication Line (1995 2.5L)
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Mazda Millenia and 1995 Mazda Millenia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Check for engine control system related DTCs. See appropriate article:
- TESTS W/CODES - 2.3L - 1995.
- TESTS W/CODES - 2.5L - 1995.
If no DTCs are present, go to next step. If any DTCs are present, repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS/TCS control module connector. ABS/TCS control module is located behind left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between terminals 2S and 2V (ground) at ABS/TCS control module connector. See Figure . If voltage is about 5 volts, go to step 5). If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) connector. ECM is located behind front of shifter console. Measure resistance between terminal 2S at ABS/TCS control module connector and terminal 4S at ECM connector. See Figure and Figure or Figure . If resistance is 500 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 500 ohms, repair open circuit in wiring harness.
- Check for continuity between ground and terminal 2S at ABS/TCS control module connector. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in wiring harness. If continuity does not exist, replace ECM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Engine Control Module (ECM) connector. ECM is located behind front of shifter console. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between terminals 3O and 4R at ECM connector. See Figure or Figure . If voltage is about 5 volts, go to step 8). If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between terminal 2R at ABS/TCS control module connector and terminal 4R at ECM connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit in wiring harness.
- Check for continuity between ground and terminal 2R at ABS/TCS control module connector. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in wiring harness. If continuity does not exist, repair ABS/TCS control module.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect ECM connector. Connect an oscilloscope between ground and terminal 2S at ABS/TCS control module connector. Turn ignition on. Observe oscilloscope. Voltage should switch from zero to 5 volts. See Figure . If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace ABS/TCS control module.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect oscilloscope. Reconnect oscilloscope between ground and terminal 2R at ABS/TCS control module connector. Start engine and allow it to idle. Observe oscilloscope. Voltage should switch from zero to 5 volts. See Figure . If voltage is as specified, replace ABS/TCS control module. If voltage is not as specified, replace ECM.
