Climate Control Housing: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Lincoln MKC. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During the removal of components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all openings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove protective materials prior to installation.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Remove the instrument panel upper section. Refer to: Instrument Panel Upper Section .
  2. Remove the driver knee airbag. Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag .
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to: Steering Wheel .
  4. WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove the bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft. Discard the bolt.

    Torque: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

  5. Remove the instrument panel lower trim panel. Refer to: Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel .
  6. NOTE: Power adjustable steering column shown, manual adjustable steering column similar.

    Disconnect the electrical connectors and position the wiring harness aside.

  7. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove the bolts and the steering column. Discard the bolts.

    Torque: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

    1. Remove the retainers.

      Torque: 18 lb.in (2 Nm)

    2. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the IPC.

  8. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.
    1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  9. NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
    NOTE: 2.3L shown, 2.0L similar.
    1. Disconnect the quick release couplings. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling 2.3L EcoBoost .
    2. Disconnect the quick release coupling.
    3. Disconnect the PCV sensor electrical connector.

  10. NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
    NOTE: 2.3L shown, 2.0L similar.
    1. Loosen the clamps.

      Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    2. Remove the bolt and the air cleaner outlet pipe.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  11. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging  .
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the evaporator pipe nut and position the flange and pipe aside.
    • Make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  13. Clamp and disconnect the heater hoses.
    • Make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system.. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp(s)

  14. Remove both front doors. Refer to: Front Door .
  15. Release the clips and remove the foot rest pad.. Use the General Equipment: Interior Trim Remover

  16. Remove both front seats. Refer to: Front Seat .
  17. Remove the retainers and position the carpet rearward.

  18. Remove the bolts, release the wiring harness retainer and position the LH harness aside.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.

      Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  19. Remove the push pin retainers and the power inverter trim cover.

    1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    2. Remove the retainers and the floor console.

      Torque: 35 lb.in (4 Nm)

    1. Position the weatherstrip aside.
    2. Release the retainers.
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the RH sill plate.. Use the General Equipment: Interior Trim Remover

    1. Remove the push pin retainer.
    2. Position the carpet rearward.

    2. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the driver side instrument panel speaker.

    2. Remove the screw.

      Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)

    3. Remove the bolts and the instrument panel center brace.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  32. NOTE: Leave the upper instrument panel support bolt finger tight.
    1. Remove the LH A-pillar to in-vehicle cross beam support bolt.

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    2. Remove the lower LH instrument panel support bolt.

      Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

    3. Loosen the upper LH instrument panel support bolt.

  33. NOTE: Leave the upper instrument panel support bolt finger tight.
    1. Remove the RH A-pillar to in-vehicle cross beam support bolt.

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    2. Remove the lower RH instrument panel support bolt.

      Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

    3. Loosen the upper RH instrument panel support bolt.

  34. NOTE: To avoid damaging the instrument panel, an assistant is required when carrying out this step.
    NOTE: Make sure not to damage the instrument panel when removing the instrument panel from the vehicle.
    NOTE: Make sure that all electrical connectors and wiring are not hindered before removing the instrument panel or damage to the components may occur.
    1. Remove the upper LH and RH instrument panel support bolts.

      Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

    2. Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the LH front door opening.

  35. Detach the retainers, position the wiring harness aside and remove the retainers.

    Torque: 27 lb.in (3 Nm)
