Pinpoint Test D
- Check For Spark During Cranking - Using a spark tester, check for spark at all spark plug wires while cranking. If spark is consistent on ALL spark plug wires, ignition system is okay. If spark is not consistent, go to step 2.
- Check For Spark At Right Spark Plug Wires During Cranking - If spark is consistent at ALL right spark plugs (one spark per crankshaft revolution), go to step 3. If spark is not consistent, go to step 19.
- Check Left Spark Plugs & Wires - Check left spark plug wires for insulation damage, looseness, shorting or other damage. Remove and check left spark plugs for damage, wear, carbon deposits and correct plug gap. Ensure connectors and plugs wires are attached to left coil pack. If spark plugs and wires are okay, reinstall plugs and go to step 4. If spark plugs or wires are defective, service or replace damaged components as necessary. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.CAUTION: Never connect ECA to BOB when performing EDIS diagnostics.
- Check For VBAT Open To Left Coil - With key off, connect left coil tee only, at this time. Connect EDIS diagnostic cable BAT (+) and BAT (-) leads to battery. Use EDIS 8 overlay (if available). Set EDIS cable box switch to "8-cylinder" position. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VBAT L (11) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 5. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open circuit in harness. VBAT L circuit is open. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C3 At Coil Pack With KOEO - Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC3C (10) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 6. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 13.
- Check C4 At Coil Pack With KOEO - Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC4C (18) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 7. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 11.
- Check C3 At EDIS Module With KOEO - With key off, connect EDIS module tee to EDIS module and vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC3E (54) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 8. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open C3 circuit in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C4 At EDIS Module With KOEO - Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC4E (55) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 9. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open C4 circuit in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C3 At Coil Pack With KOEO, Isolate Coil - With key off, disconnect left coil pack from coil tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC3C (10) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 1 volt, go to step 10. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 15.
- Check C3 At Coil Pack, Isolate EDIS Module - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC3C (10) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is less than 1 volt, replace EDIS module. C3 is shorted to power. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is 1 volt or more, repair C3 circuit short to power in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C4 For Short To Ground - With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and LC4C (18) at BOB. If resistance is less than 1200 ohms, go to step 12. If resistance is 1200 ohms or more, replace left coil pack. C4 open in coil. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C4 For Short To Ground In Harness - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and LC4C (18) at BOB. If resistance reading is 5 ohms or less, service short circuit. C4 is shorted to ground in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace EDIS module. C4 is shorted to ground in EDIS module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C3 For Short To Ground - With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C3C (10) at BOB. If resistance reading is 1200 ohms or less, go to step 13. If resistance is 1200 ohms or more, replace left coil pack. C3 open in coil. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C3 at Coil Pack, Isolate EDIS Module - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C3C (10) at BOB. If resistance is greater than 2 k/ohms, replace EDIS module. C3 is shorted to power. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is 2 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit. C4 is shorted to power in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C4 At Coil Pack With KOEO, Isolate Coil - Set DVOM on 20-volt scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC4C (18) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 1 volt, proceed to step 16. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 17.
- Check C4 At Coil Pack With KOEO, Isolate EDIS Module - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between LC4C (18) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is 1 volt or less, replace EDIS module. C4 is shorted to power in module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is greater than 1 volt, service short circuit. C4 is shorted to power in vehicle harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C3 At Coil Pack With Engine Running Or Cranking - Connect test light between VBAT E (35) and LC3C (10). Crank or start engine. If light blinks, go to step 18. If light does not blink, replace EDIS module. C3 is open in module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C4 At Coil Pack With Engine Running Or Cranking - Connect test light between VBAT E (35) and LC4C (18). Crank or start engine. If light blinks, replace left coil pack. Input to coil pack is okay but no high voltage output. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If light does not blink, replace EDIS module. C4 is open in module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check Right Spark Plugs & Wires - Check right spark plug wires for insulation damage, looseness, shorting or other damage. Remove and check right spark plugs for damage, wear, carbon deposits and proper plug gap. If spark plugs and wires are okay, reinstall plugs and wires, go to step 20. If spark plugs and wires are defective, service or replace damaged components as necessary. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.CAUTION: Never connect ECA to BOB when performing EDIS diagnostics.
- Check For Open VBAT Circuit To Right Coil - With key off, connect negative lead to battery. Install right coil diagnostic cable tee. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VBAT (5) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 21. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open VBAT circuit in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C1 At Coil Pack With KOEO - Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With key on, engine off, measure voltage between RC1C (3) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 22. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 27.
- Check C2 At Coil Pack With KOEO - Set DVOM on 20-volt scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC2C (6) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 23. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 29.
- Check C1 At EDIS Module With KOEO - With key off, install EDIS module tee. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC1E (51) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 24. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open C1 circuit in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C2 At EDIS Module With KOEO - Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC2E (27) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 25. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open C2 circuit in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C1 At Coil Pack With KOEO, Isolate Coil - With key off, disconnect right coil from diagnostic cable coil tee. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC1C (3) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 1 volt, proceed to step 26. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 31.
- Check C1 At Coil Pack, Isolate EDIS Module - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from diagnostic cable module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC1C (3) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is 1 volt or less, replace EDIS module. C1 is shorted to power. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is greater than 1 volt, repair short circuit. C1 is shorted to power in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check For C1 Short To Ground - With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and RC1C (3) at BOB. If resistance is less than 1200 ohms, go to step 28. If resistance is greater than 200 ohms, replace right coil pack. C1 circuit open in coil. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check For C1 Short To Ground In Harness - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from diagnostic cable module tee. Leave diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and RC1C (3) at BOB. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short circuit. C1 is shorted to ground in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace EDIS module. C1 is shorted to ground in module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check For C2 Short To Ground - With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and RC2C (6) at BOB. If resistance is less than 1200 ohms, go to step 30. If resistance is greater than 1200 ohms, replace right coil pack. C2 is open in coil. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check For C2 At Coil Pack, Isolate EDIS Module - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from diagnostic cable module tee. Leave diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between RC2C (6) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace EDIS module. C2 is shorted to power. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair short circuit. C2 is shorted to power in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C2 At Coil Pack, Isolate Coil - Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC2C (6) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 1 volt, go to step 32. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 33.
- Check C2 At Coil Pack With KOEO, Isolate EDIS Module - With key off, disconnect EDIS module from diagnostic cable module tee. Leave diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between RC2C (6) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is 1 volt or less, replace EDIS module. C2 circuit shorted high in EDIS module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is greater than 1 volt, service short circuit. C2 shorted high in harness. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C1 At Coil Pack With Engine Running Or Cranking, Isolate Coil - Connect test light between VPWR E (35) and RC1C (3). Crank or start engine. If light blinks, go to step 36. If light does not blink, replace EDIS module. C1 circuit is open in EDIS module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
- Check C2 At Coil Pack With Engine Running Or Cranking - Connect test light between VPWR E (35) and RC2C (6). Crank or start engine. If light blinks consistently, replace right coil pack. C2 circuit is open. Input to coil pack is okay, but no high voltage output. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If light does not blink, replace EDIS module. C2 circuit is open in module. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
