ISSUE

The AXOD transaxle used in 1988 Taurus/Sable and Continental vehicles with 3.8L engines has a new, sixth internal switch, Transaxle Temperature Switch (TTS). This sixth internal switch, TTS, makes it necessary to modify the existing Rotunda Essential Tool (01400442) to perform transaxle diagnosis on these vehicles only.

ACTION

If service is required, rework the existing Rotunda Essential Tool (014 00442) using the following procedure.

In the future, test adapter wire harnesses will be manufactured with six (6) wire leads and can be used on all AXOD transaxles.

Slide RED terminal retainer out of connector.
Remove friction tape from connector.
Carefully pierce a small hole into rubber grommet, Figure 1.
Feed YELLOW modification wire, supplied by OTC Division, through flexible tubing and carefully insert YELLOW wire into pierced hole. Be sure terminal end of YELLOW wire is secured by the connector terminal retention tab.
Reinstall RED terminal retainer. Be sure it is flush with end of connector.
Replace friction tape.
