SERVICE INFORMATION

Some foreign objects may be blown into the heater or A/C plenum chamber. To prevent this condition from recurring, a protective screen should be placed over the outside air intake opening (cowl grille). Screen should be obtained locally.

AIR INTAKE SCREEN INSTALLATION

(Escort/Lynx, EXP, Tempo/Topaz Vehicles)

  1. Remove right end of the hood-on-cowl pad from the dash panel extension. See Fig 1 .
  2. Remove six (6) clips retaining the right cowl top deflector to the cowl and dash panel extension and remove the deflector. See Figure 1.
  3. Procure locally a 9x12 inch piece of 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth. Then, cut the hardware cloth to the shape shown in Figure 2.
  4. Fold down along lines 1 and 2 and place the hardware cloth over the cowl air intake opening with fold line 1 toward the rear of the vehicle and fold line 2 toward the center of the vehicle. Then, fold the remaining sides and corners of the hardware cloth down and around the air intake opening as tight against the flange as possible.
  5. Remove the hardware cloth from the air intake opening and drill two (2 1/8 inch holes in the air intake opening flange. See Figure 1. Drill one hole in the outboard side and one hole in the rear center of the flange.
  6. Position the hardware cloth over the air intake opening. Then, using the two 1/8 inch holes, install two hex head metal screws to retain the hardware cloth to the air inlet opening.
  7. Install the right cowl top deflector and the hood-on-cowl pad. See Fig 1 .

AIR INTAKE SCREEN INSTALLATION

(Mustang/Capri, Continental, LTD/Marquis Vehicles)

  3. Using the cowl top vent grille as a template, cut a piece of galvanized steel window screen to the size necessary to cover the opening and fit under the cowl top vent grille. Make two (2) cut-outs in the screen for the right wiper arm pivot and the windshield washer fluid hose to pass through.
  4. After the screen is fabricated, paint it with black enamel and allow it to dry.
  5. Place the screen over the inlet grille opening while inserting the windshield washer fluid hose through the cut-out provided in the screen.
  6. Position the cowl top vent grille to the vehicle and connect the windshield washer fluid hose to the washer jet.
  7. Install the screws to attach the cowl top vent grille to the vehicle.
  8. Install the windshield wiper arms on the pivots.
