Differential Assembly: Inspection
- Drain differential. Remove differential assembly. See DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using a dial indicator, measure drive pinion runout at a point .39" (10 mm) from end of drive pinion. If runout is greater than .0031" (.079 mm), replace drive pinion and ring gear.
- Remove 8 differential carrier cover bolts and differential carrier cover. Use a brass drift to separate cover and carrier. Install differential carrier to an overhaul stand. Using a dial indicator, measure ring gear runout. If ring gear runout is greater than .0020" (.051 mm), replace drive pinion, ring gear and differential case.
- Reposition dial indicator and measure ring gear backlash in at least 3 different points. Adjust ring gear backlash if average measurement is not within .0031-.0051" (.079-.130 mm). If the difference between minimum and maximum measurements is greater than .0020" (.051 mm), adjust ring gear backlash.
- Using an Oil Cooler Relief Valve Socket (09229-55010) and a torque wrench, measure drive pinion preload using backlash of drive pinion and ring gear. Preload at start should be 4.3-6.9 INCH lbs. (.5-.8 N.m). On vehicles with less than 5000 miles, maximum preload is 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m). Without using backlash from drive pinion and ring gear, total preload is 8.6-13.8 INCH lbs. (1.0-1.6 N.m). If preload is not within specification, disassemble and inspect differential.
- Measure pinion gear backlash while holding one side gear toward case. If pinion gear backlash is not within .0020-.0079" (.051-.201 mm), install correct thrust washer. See Figure.
