Fuel Pump
- Before performing fuel pump test, check for kinked or bent fuel tubes or hoses that could cause restrictions. Also check for fuel leaks in supply tubes and hoses.
- Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect fuel inlet fitting at carburetor. Disconnect fuel return hose at filter and plug fitting on filter. Remove any spilled fuel from engine.
- Connect fuel pressure gauge, hose restrictor, and flexible hose between fuel filter and carburetor. Position flexible hose and hose restrictor so fuel can be discharged into a graduated container.
- Operate engine at curb idle RPM and permit fuel to discharge into graduated container by momentarily opening hose restrictor. Close hose restrictor and allow pressure to stabilize.
- Note fuel pump pressure reading. Fuel gauge should indicate 5.0-6.5 psi (.35-.46 kg/cm 2)). If fuel pump pressure is correct, go to next step. If fuel pump pressure is not within specification and fuel tubes/hoses and filter are okay, replace fuel pump.
- Operate engine at curb idle. Open hose restrictor and allow fuel to discharge into graduated container for 30 seconds, then close restrictor. At least 16 ounces (.47 liters) of fuel should have been discharged.
- If fuel pump volume is less than specified, repeat test using an auxiliary fuel supply and replacement fuel filter. If fuel pump volume is now correct, check for restrictions in fuel tubes/hoses and fuel tank for proper venting.
