July 1: So it begins. Don't worry, this is not in the correct legal jurisdiction!

Fuel Injector Coil Test

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK in BASIC TESTING article. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE. Connect Fuel Injector Tester (J 39021) to battery positive and ground. Connect Injector Switch Box (J 39021-210) . Set amperage supply selector switch to 0.5 amp position. Set DVOM to tenths scale. Connect scan tool. Monitor ECT. If ECT is within 50-95 degrees (10-35 C), go to step 4). If temperature is not as specified, go to step 3).
  3. Allow engine to warm or cool as necessary. When ECT is within specifications, go to step 4).
  4. Perform following test for each injector. Press Push To Start Test button. Monitor DVOM (voltage readings may be erratic). Voltage should be between 5.44-7.53 volts. If voltage readings are as specified, go to FUEL INJECTOR BALANCE TEST. If any voltage readings are not within specifications, go to step 5).
  5. Replace fuel injector and poppet nozzle assembly that was not within specifications. Go to step 6).
  6. Use scan tool to select DTC and Clear Info. Start engine. If engine starts and continues to run, go to step 7). If engine does not start, go to step 2).
  7. Run engine at idle until operating temperature is obtained. Select DTC and Failed This Ign. If any DTC's displayed, go to applicable DTC table. If no DTC displayed, go to step 8).
  8. Use scan tool to display Capture Info and Review Info. If any DTC displayed that has not been diagnosed, go to applicable DTC table. If no DTC displayed, system okay.
