Test D: Warning Indicator Is On With Engine Running, System Is Charging

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Ford Ranger and 2002 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Check warning indicator. If warning indicator is illuminated, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between generator and instrument cluster. On 3.0L models, if warning indicator is not illuminated, go to next step. On 2.3L and 4.0L models, if warning indicator is not illuminated, replace generator.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect generator harness connector. Check generator 1-pin harness connector for damage, corrosion and looseness (White/Black wire). If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
  3. NOTE: There are 2 terminals "S" on generator. Ensure voltage measurement is made at 1-pin harness connector and not at 3-pin harness connector.
  4. Start engine and let idle. Using DVOM, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and generator 1-pin harness connector terminal "S" (White/Black wire). See Figure. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. If voltage is 5 volts or more, replace voltage regulator. If voltage is less than 5 volts, replace generator.
