Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Exhaust System:





1. Remove the two nuts and bolts attaching the converter assembly to the outlet pipe.
2. Remove the catalyst to rear engine mount U-bolt.
3. Remove the three nuts connecting the converter to the Y-pipe assembly. Swing the muffler and outlet pipe to the rear, then remove the converter.
4. Clean all mating surfaces.
5. Install the converter to the outlet pipe using a new non-asbestos gasket. Install the fasteners and torque to 27-31 ft lb (36-42 Nm).
6. Install the converter to the Y-pipe using a new non-asbestos gasket. Install the nuts and torque to 27-31 ft lb (36-42 Nm).
7. For manual transmission equipped trucks position the U-bolt and bracket assembly on the foremost keyed position. For automatic transmission equipped trucks position the U-bolt and bracket assembly on the rear most keyed position. Make sure the bracket rod is aligned throughout the entire length of the bracket and insulator assembly. Torque the U-bolt nuts to 27-31 ft lb (36-42 Nm) while maintaining alignment.
