ENGINE-2.3L HSC-FLYWHEEL TIMING MARK IDENTIFICATION-VEHICLES WITH ATX AND MTX TRANSAXLES


FORD: 1984-92 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1984-92 TOPAZ


ISSUE:
The engine flywheel timing mark diagnostic symbols need to be clearly identified when performing diagnostic procedures and setting initial timing.

ACTION:
if service is required, refer to the following engine timing mark diagnostic symbols to set initial engine timing.








1984 TEMPO/TOPAZ

The diagnostic symbols to set initial timing at 10~ BTDC or 15~ BTDC are shown in Figures 1 and 2. Refer to the emission decal on the vehicle for timing specifications.








1985-1987 TEMPO/TOPAZ

The diagnostic symbols to set initial timing at 10~ BTDC are shown in Figures 3 and 4. Refer to the emission decal on the vehicle for timing specifications.








1988-1991 TEMPO/TOPAZ

The diagnostic symbols to set initial timing at 15~ BTDC are shown in Figures 5 and 6. Refer to the emission decal on the vehicle for timing specifications.


1992 TEMPO/TOPAZ - INITIAL TIMING PROCEDURE (DIFFERENT THAN 1984-91)

Set engine initial timing by using a timing pointer located on the engine front cover with the appropriate timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. Refer to the emission decal on the vehicle for timing specifications.
