DTC Test No. 15 - Knock Sensor

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Possible causes for DTC are: defective knock sensor, loose connector, open or shorted knock sensor wiring circuit or defective ECM.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from knock sensor. Knock sensor is located on side of cylinder block, just below intake manifold. Knock sensor contains a 2-pin Gray connector with White and Black/White wires in the connector.
  2. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire) on wiring harness side of connector for knock sensor. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit on Black/White wire between knock sensor and ground.
  3. Check for defective terminals or connections at knock sensor and 22-pin ECM connector B-56. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console. If terminals and connections are okay, go to next step. If any terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary.
  4. Check for a trouble symptom. For specific symptoms, see the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  . If no trouble symptom exists, go to next step.
  5. Check wiring harness between ECM and knock sensor. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness.
  6. Replace knock sensor and check for a trouble symptom. See the the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  . If trouble symptom exists, replace ECM.
