DTC Test No. 12 - Injector Circuit

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Possible causes for DTC are: defective injector, loose connector, open or shorted injector wiring circuit or defective ECM.
  1. Check fuel injectors and fuel injector resistor. See procedures in the SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article. If injectors and fuel injector resistor are okay, go to next step. If any injectors or fuel injector resistor are defective, replace components as necessary.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector at fuel injector resistor. Fuel injector resistor is located near throttle body. See Fig 1 .

  3. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (Red wire) on wiring harness side of connector.
  4. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check wiring harness between fuel injector resistor and MFI relay. MFI relay is located on passenger's side of center console, just in front of emergency brake lever. See Figure . Repair wiring harness as necessary.
    NOTE: The MFI relay provides battery voltage to various other components for the fuel injection system. Consult wiring diagram. See the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  5. Ensure ignition is off. Reinstall connector on fuel injector resistor. Disconnect connectors at fuel injectors. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and specified terminal on connector of each injector. See INJECTOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table.

    Injector No. Connector Terminal No. (Wire Color)
    1 1 (Red/Blue)
    2 1 (Green/Black)
    3 1 (Green/Red)
    4 1 (Green)
    (1) Injector No. 1 is at timing belt end of engine and injector No. 4 is at flywheel end of engine.
  6. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 8). If battery voltage does not exist, check for defective terminals or connections at connector on fuel injector resistor.
  7. If any terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  . If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between fuel injector resistor and connector for injector. Repair wiring harness as necessary.
  8. If voltage is within specification, check injector control circuit. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 45.
