October 30: LEMON manuals on a temporary server, it is slow and having issues, download the manuals you need! Later in November we will switch back to the fast server.
Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor Output
- Disconnect wheel speed sensor connector of sensor which set trouble code. See the TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS
table under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Test sensor. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR TEST
under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If sensor is within specification, proceed to the next step. If sensor is not within specification, replace sensor. Refer to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Check wheel speed sensor-to-rotor for proper gap. Refer to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
under ADJUSTMENTS. If wheel speed sensor-to-rotor gap is within specification, go to next step. If gap is not within specification, adjust sensor-to-rotor gap.
- Inspect wheel speed sensor rotor which set trouble code for damaged or missing teeth. If rotor is okay, go to next step. If rotor is damaged, replace rotor.
- Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect ECU connector. Using a DVOM, measure and record wheel sensor output voltage between ECU connector terminals as specified in TESTING WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT
table. See Figure
. Using an oscilloscope, observe wave shape pattern for each wheel with engine idling and transmission in low gear (on FWD, rear wheels must by rotated by hand).
TESTING WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT
| Application |
Measure Between Terminals: |
| Front Left Wheel Sensor |
14 & 15 |
| Front Right Wheel Sensor |
31 & 33 |
| Right Rear Wheel Sensor |
28 & 30 |
| Left Rear Wheel Sensor |
10 & 11 |
- Voltage reading should be approximately 5 volts. See Fig 1
. With engine speed increased to 9-12 MPH, output voltage should be approximately 10 volts. If oscilloscope wave shape pattern is distorted or sensor voltage output is not within specification, go to next step. If oscilloscope wave shape pattern is normal and output voltage is within specification, go to step 7).
- Check for broken or disconnected wheel sensor wire, faulty wheel speed sensor installation and damaged wheel speed sensor rotor. If output voltage is low or no voltage output exists, test wheel speed sensor. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR TEST
under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Replace or repair as necessary.
- If no fault can be found with wheel speed sensor, wheel speed rotor or wiring harness, wheel speed sensor circuit is okay. Replace faulty ECU, clear codes and road test vehicle.
