8HP70 Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Installation

CAUTION:

The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.

NOTE: If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
  1. If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the manual shift lever and shift cable bracket, Mechanical Park Release bracket from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.
  2. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the rear pocket of the engine's crankshaft.
  3. Install the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLATION .
  4. Raise transmission and align the torque converter with the driveplate and the transmission converter housing with the engine block.

  5. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower, or tilt transmission to align the converter housing with the engine block dowels.
    NOTE: It may be necessary to support the rear of the engine during transmission installation.
  6. Carefully work transmission (2) forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.
  7. Install two bolts to attach the transmission to the engine.
  8. Install remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts (3 and 4). Tighten all torque converter housing bolts to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  9. Install torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    NOTE: Install all torque converter bolts (1) by hand first. There are 3 sets of two bolts 120° apart.

  10. Connect left front transmission line clip (1).

  11. Connect the transmission lines. Be sure that the lines are fully seated.

  12. Install the wiring harness bracket and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  13. Check O-ring on plug connector (1), and replace if necessary.

  14. Install the plug connector (1) into the adapter plug (2). Turn bayonet lock of the adapter plug (2) clockwise to connect plug connector (1).
  15. Install the transfer case. Refer to MP3010 TRANSFER CASE, INSTALLATION or MP3015 TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or MP3023 TRANSFER CASE, INSTALLATION .
  16. Install the engine structural cover and torque bolts first to 9 N. m (80 in. lbs.)
    NOTE: The left front structural cover bolt (2) must be installed with the cover.

  17. Final torque the structural cover to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  18. Install the starter. Refer to 5.7L, STARTER, INSTALLATION .
  19. Install the left and right Catalytic converters. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, INSTALLATION .
  20. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft heat shield.
  21. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, INSTALLATION .
  22. Install the cross-member. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION, INSTALLATION .
  23. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, INSTALLATION .
  24. Remove the zip tie (3) from the MPR lever.

  25. Connect the MPR cable (1) to the MPR lever (2).
  26. Install heat shield for rear driveshaft/muffler.
  27. Install the rear section of exhaust. Refer to 5.7L, MUFFLER, EXHAUST, INSTALLATION .
  28. If equipped install skid plates. Refer to PLATE, SKID, TRANSMISSION, INSTALLATION .
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Connect the battery negative cable.
  31. Fill the transmission with appropriate fluid. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE .
  32. If the valve body is replaced, program the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
  33. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
