Ignition Timing Procedure

  1. Attach a magnetic timing probe or connect a timing light to No. 1 cylinder. Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached.
  2. With engine at normal operating temperature, disconnect coolant temperature sensor. Radiator fan and "CHECK ENGINE" light should come on.
  3. Observe basic timing setting. Loosen distributor hold-down bolt and adjust timing if not within 2 degrees of specification given on Emission Control Label. Turn engine off. Remove timing device.
  4. Reconnect coolant temperature sensor. "CHECK ENGINE" light MUST go out. Erase fault codes using the "ERASE FAULT CODE" mode on a DRB-II. For more information, see appropriate article in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS section of this manual.
