DTC Test No. 56: Right Bank Fuel System Rich

NOTE: Circuit is monitored when engine coolant temperature is 170°F (76°C) or more and vehicle is in closed loop operation. DTC is set when fuel control system reduces pulse width by 25 percent (long term memory) and 7 percent (short term compensation) due to a rich condition. Possible causes for DTC to set are: defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, defective Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, defective head gasket, exhaust manifold cracked, defective fuel injectors, defective Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, defective right bank HO2S, defective wiring harness or connectors or defective PCM.
  1. Turn ignition on or start engine. Using scan tool, read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor temperature (sensor read test No. 05). Scan tool display and actual engine coolant temperature should be the same. If values are the same, go to next step. If values are not the same, check ECT sensor circuit. See TEST NTC-40: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT .
  2. Using scan tool, read Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor temperature (sensor read test No. 27). Scan tool display and actual intake air temperature should be the same. If values are the same, go to next step. If values are not the same, check IAT sensor circuit. See TEST NTC-41: INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT .
  3. Turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor pressure (sensor read test No. 11). Value should be 30 in. Hg at sea level and 26 in. Hg at 3937 ft. (value will vary with altitude). If values are as specified, go to next step. If values are not as specified, check MAP sensor circuit. See TEST NTC-42: MAP SENSOR CIRCUIT .
  4. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Drive vehicle in low with engine speed at 3500 RPM and throttle wide open. Using scan tool, read right bank downstream HO2S voltage (sensor read test No. 73). Voltage should be 600-1000 millivolts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check downstream HO2S circuit. See TEST NTC-44: DOWNSTREAM HO2S CIRCUIT .
  5. Let engine idle. Using scan tool, read right bank upstream HO2S voltage (sensor read test No. 47). Suddenly race engine. Voltage should be 600-1000 millivolts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check upstream HO2S circuit. See TEST NTC-43: UPSTREAM HO2S CIRCUIT .
  6. Increase engine speed to 2500 RPM. Using scan tool, read right bank upstream HO2S voltage (sensor read test No. 47). Voltage should fluctuate between less than 400 millivolts and 600-1000 millivolts. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  8.
  7. Check fuel pressure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - CARS article. Fuel pressure should be 47-50 psi (3.3-3.5 kg/cm2 ). If fuel pressure is as specified, go to next step. If fuel pressure is not as specified, repair fuel system as necessary.
  8. Check the following and repair as necessary.
    • Injector Operation
    • Leaking Injectors
    • Evaporative Emission Control System
