DTC Test No. 13: Idle Air Control Motor Circuits

NOTE: During actuator test No. 07, idle air control motor will turn on and off approximately every 2.8 seconds.
NOTE: Circuit is monitored when ignition is on and battery voltage is 10 volts or more. DTC is set when an open or short circuit is detected in Idle Air Control (IAC) motor circuit for 3 seconds. Possible causes for DTC to set are: driver circuit shorted to ground, driver circuit shorted to battery voltage, driver circuits shorted together, defective PCM or shorted IAC motor.
  1. Start engine and let idle. Using scan tool, actuate Idle Air Control (IAC) motor (actuator test No. 07). Idle speed should fluctuate and IAC motor should be heard operating. If idle speed is not fluctuating and/or IAC motor cannot be heard operating, go to next step. If idle speed is fluctuating and IAC motor can be heard operating, failure is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAC motor harness connector. Measure resistance between terminals No. 1 and 4 at IAC motor (component side). Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 at IAC motor (component side). Both resistances should be 38-52 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If both resistances are as specified, go to next step. If either resistance is not as specified, replace IAC motor.
  3. Inspect IAC motor connector and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors for damaged wires or terminals. PCM is located at left front corner of engine compartment, in front of Electronic Automatic Transmission Electronic Control Module (EATX-ECM), near relay box. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair connector(s) as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition off. Connect all disconnected components. Using scan tool, retrieve and record DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear DTCs. Test drive vehicle under conditions when DTC was set. If DTC returns, go to next step. If DTC does not return, test is complete.
  5. Check wiring between IAC motor and PCM. If problem exists, repair wiring as necessary. If problem does not exist, replace PCM.
