DTC P0462: Fuel Level Sending Unit Volts Too Low
NOTE:
For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
.
NOTE:
Fuel level sending unit may also be referred to as fuel level sensor. Fuel level sending unit voltage is monitored when ignition is on. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if fuel level sending unit voltage at Body Control Module (BCM) decreases to less than .10 volt. Possible causes are; defective fuel level sending unit, defective BCM, or defective connectors or wiring.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 6 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump module connector. Fuel pump module contains fuel pump, fuel level sending and is located on top of fuel tank. Fuel pump module connector is located inside the trunk, below carpet, next to driver's side strut tower. See Fig 1 .
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, read fuel level sensor voltage on scan tool. If fuel level sensor voltage is 4.5 volts or less, go to next step. If fuel level sensor voltage is more than 4.5 volts, replace fuel level sending unit. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM connector C5. The BCM is located on rear of junction block at driver's side of instrument panel. BCM connector C5 is a Black 20-pin connector. See Figure .
- Ensure fuel pump module connector is still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 15 (Dark Blue wire) on BCM connector C5. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace BCM. Reprogram BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. Perform TEST VER-2A . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Dark Blue wire between BCM and fuel level sending unit. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Turn ignition off. Inspect Dark Blue wire and connectors between fuel level sending unit on fuel pump module and terminal No. 15 (Dark Blue wire) on BCM connector C5. The BCM is located on rear of junction block at driver's side of instrument panel. BCM connector C5 is a Black 20-pin connector. See Figure . Fuel pump module contains fuel pump, fuel level sending and is located on top of fuel tank. Fuel pump module connector is located inside the trunk, below carpet, next to driver's side strut tower. See Fig 1 . If no problems exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, read FUEL LEVEL SENSOR voltage while wiggling wiring harness and connectors between BCM connector C5 and fuel level sending unit. If FUEL LEVEL SENSOR voltage does not change while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, test is complete. If FUEL LEVEL SENSOR voltage changes while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A .
