Steering Gear - Power: Description

Front wheel drive models use both Saginaw and TRW power rack and pinion steering units. Power-assisted rack and pinion steering gear mounts on front frame crossmember behind left axle.

A rotary valve in pinion assembly directs fluid to either side of integral rack piston, which is permanently secured to rack. Tie rods move steering arms and wheels while accommodating suspension movement.

If drive belt or pump breaks, pinion drive tangs, loosely mated to stub shaft, will give manual steering control. (Steering effort will increase.)
