Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector. Turn ON the ignition, leaving the engine OFF. Connect a test light between the harness side of terminal No. 2 and ground. Connect a test light between the harness side of terminal No. 5 and ground. Does the test light illuminate on both circuits? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7 .
  3. Using DVOM, check resistance between EGR valve assembly terminals No. 1 and 2, terminals No. 2 and 3, terminals No. 5 and 6, and terminals No. 4 and 5. Resistance should be 20-24 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Check resistance between EGR valve body and harness connector terminals No. 2 and 5. Resistance should be infinite. Does the EGR valve pass all the resistance tests? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9 .
  4. Connect the EGR valve electrical connector. Install a scan tool. Start the engine. Operate the engine until the engine reaches a normal operating temperature. Perform the scan tool Clear DTC Information function. Using the scan tool, gradually command the EGR valve open to 100 percent. Does the engine run rough or stall? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If no, go to next step.
  5. Perform the scan tool Clear DTC Information function. Start engine. Operate engine for 1 minute or until the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminates. Check for DTCs. Is DTC P0403 set? If yes, go to step  8 . If no, go to step  11 .
  6. Test the EGR coil control circuits C4-14 and C4-15 for an open or a short circuit. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  11 . If no, go to step  10 .
  7. Repair open in ignition positive voltage circuit. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  8. Test EGR coil control circuits C4-13 and C4-16 for an open or a short circuit. Test the EGR coil control circuits C4-15 and C4-14 for an open or a short to ground. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  11 . If no, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace EGR valve. After replacing EGR valve, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition off. Remove DOME fuse for 30 seconds. Reinstall fuse. Reset radio clock time. Start engine and operate vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC or until DTC P0403 diagnostic test has run. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2 .
  12. Using scan tool, observe stored information and Capture Info. If scan tool displays any undiagnosed DTCs, diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no other DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
