Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Select the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value more than or equal to 284°F (140°C). If yes, go to step  5 . If no, go to next step.
  3. Select the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value less than or equal to -40°F (-40°C). If yes, go to step  7 . If no, go to next step.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to step  2 . If DTC does not reset, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  5. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector. Select the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value equal to -40°F (-40°C). If yes, go to step  13 . If no, go to next step.
  6. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM electrical connector at the PCM. Check the ECT sensor input circuit for a short to ground. Ensure that the input circuit is not shorted to the sensor ground circuit. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  15 . If no, go to step  14 .
  7. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector. Jump the ECT input circuit and the sensor ground circuit together at the ECT sensor harness connector. Select the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value more than or equal to 284°F (140°C). If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  8. Jump the ECT input circuit at the ECT sensor harness connector to chassis ground. Select the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value more than or equal to 284°F (140°C). If yes, go to step  10 . If no, go to step  11 .
  9. Check for faulty electrical connections at the ECT sensor. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  15 . If no, go to step  13 .
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Check the ECT sensor ground circuit for an open. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  15 . If no, go to step  12 .
  11. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Check the ECT sensor input circuit for an open. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  15 . If no, go to next step.
  12. Check for a faulty ECT circuit terminal connection at the PCM. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  15 . If no, go to step  14 .
  13. Replace ECT sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step  15 .
  14. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  15. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  16. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
