Test A: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click

  1. Review system description and operation. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  . Perform a visual inspection of system wiring and components. Ensure electrical connections are clean and tight. Ensure system fuses and fusible links are okay. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to START position. If solenoid clicks, check for possible intermittent conditions, and loose connections that could cause the problem, and repair as necessary. If solenoid does not click, go to next step.
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to START position and monitor STARTER SWITCH parameter in ENGINE DATA list on scan tool. If scan tool indicates CRANKING, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate CRANKING, go to step  9 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect start wire (Black wire) from solenoid. Connect a test light between start wire connector and ground. Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light illuminates, go to step  12 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  5. Check start wire (Black wire) circuit for high resistance or an open, and repair as necessary. If high resistance or an open was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If high resistance or an open was not found, go to next step.
  6. Check ST relay supply voltage (Black wire) circuit for high resistance or an open, and repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If high resistance or an open was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If high resistance or an open was not found, go to next step.
  7. Check ST relay control circuit (Black/White wire) for high resistance or an open, and repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If high resistance or an open was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If high resistance or an open was not found, go to next step.
  8. Check ST relay crank voltage circuit (Black wire) for high resistance or an open, and repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If high resistance or an open was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If high resistance or an open was not found, go to step  18 .
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PNP or CPP switch. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between PNP or CPP switch connector terminals. Connect a test light between solenoid start wire connector and ground. Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light illuminates, go to step  13 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  10. Connect a test light between crank voltage circuit (Black/White wire) of PNP or CPP switch connector and ground. Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light illuminates, go to step  16 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  11. Check crank voltage circuit (Black/White wire) of PNP or CPP switch for high resistance or an open, and repair as necessary. If high resistance or an open was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If high resistance or an open was not found, go to step  15 .
  12. Check for poor connections at solenoid, and repair as necessary. If a poor connection was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If a poor connection was not found, go to step  17 .
  13. Check PNP or CPP switch for proper operation. Using scan tool, monitor PNP or CPP switch positions. If an improper switch condition was found, adjust, repair or replace switch as necessary, and go to step  21 . If a condition was not found, go to next step.
  14. Check for poor connections at PNP or CPP switch, and repair as necessary. If a poor connection was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If a poor connection was not found, go to step  19 .
  15. Check for a poor connection at ignition switch, and repair as necessary. If a poor connection was found and repaired, go to step  21 . If a poor connection was not found, go to step  20 .
  16. Repair the high resistance or open condition in starter solenoid crank voltage circuit (Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If repair is complete, go to step  21 .
  17. Replace starter. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If replacement is complete, go to step  21 .
  18. Replace starter (ST) relay in fuse and relay block 1. See Figure . If replacement is complete, go to step  21 .
  19. Replace PNP or CPP switch. If replacement is complete, go to step  21 .
  20. Replace ignition switch. If replacement is complete, go to step  21 .
  21. Operate system. If problem was corrected, system is okay. If problem was not corrected, go to step  3 .
