Code 96 - BRAKELIGHT Circuit Open: Notes

This test identifies cause of Code 95 failure and advice driver ABS is still available. If Code 95 appears with Code 96, then either brakelights are open, brakelight ground is open, or Center High-Mounted Stoplight (CHMSL) is open during 4-way flasher operation.

Code 96 can set only after Code 95 has been set and EBCM detects battery voltage on brake switch input circuit for .5 second. Code will be stored, but ABS will not be disabled.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to numbers on diagnostic chart. Use only 10-megohm (minimum) DVOM for all voltage and resistance tests.
  1. A false Code 96 may set due to brake switch circuit malfunction. If any other brake switch codes are present, proceed to that code first.
  2. Confirms malfunction is currently present in brake circuit.
