CODE 44 (Lean Exhaust Indication)
- If feedback solenoid does not click with ignition on and ALDL test terminal grounded and no code 23, check for sticking feedback solenoid. If solenoid is okay, go to next step.
- Ground ALDL test terminal and connect dwell meter to feedback solenoid (6-cyl. scale). Run engine at 3000 RPM and note dwell after one minute. If under 15 degrees, go to step 3). If dwell is between 15-50 degrees, replace O2 sensor.
- With engine at part throttle, choke engine. If no dwell change, go to step 4). If dwell increases greater than 50 degrees, check for intake air leak or exhaust leak ahead of O2 sensor. If no leaks, repair carburetor.
- Disconnect O2 sensor and connect digital voltmeter (20 volt scale) to O2 sensor harness to ECM. Note dwell. If dwell increases, check for open circuit from ECM connector terminal No. 20 to ground. If okay, O2 sensor or connection is faulty. If dwell is under 10 degrees, check for grounded or open circuit to ECM connector terminal No. 3. If okay, ECM or connection is faulty.
