Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 GMC Sierra and 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If BCM diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If BCM diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform BCM diagnostic system check. See BCM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Disconnect Blue BCM connector C2 and remove connector combs. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage (backprobe) at Blue BCM connector C2 terminal B9 (Light Green wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to step  9 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  3. Reconnect Blue BCM connector. Using scan tool, select INPUTS 1 and monitor KEY IN IGNITION. Connect fused jumper between ground and Blue BCM connector C2 terminal B9 (Light Green wire). If scan tool displays YES for KEY IN IGNITION, go to next step. If scan tool displays NO for KEY IN IGNITION, go to step  10 .
  4. Remove jumper from between ground and Blue BCM connector C2. Disconnect connector from top of ignition lock cylinder switch (switch for key in ignition). Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at ignition lock cylinder switch connector (Light Green wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  8 .
  5. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe Black wire at ignition lock cylinder switch connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  7 .
  6. Replace switch at top of ignition lock cylinder (switch for key in ignition). After repair, go to step  11 .
  7. Repair open in Black wire between ground and ignition lock cylinder switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, go to step  11 .
  8. Repair open in Light Green wire between Blue BCM connector C2 terminal B9 and ignition lock cylinder switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . After repair, go to step  11 .
  9. Repair short to battery voltage in Light Green wire between Blue BCM connector C2 terminal B9 and ignition lock cylinder switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Inspect ignition lock cylinder switch (switch for key in ignition) for possible damage due to short to battery condition. After repair, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace BCM and program. See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  11. Reconnect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
