Interval (Pulse) Mode Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Cadillac Catera. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect wiper interval switch connector. Turn ignition on. Set wiper switch to interval position. Measure voltage between ground and Black/White wire at wiper interval switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in Black/White wire between wiper switch connector and wiper interval switch connector. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . Recheck system operation. If no problem is indicated, replace wiper switch. Recheck system operation.
  2. Reconnect wiper interval switch connector. Disconnect wiper motor relay. Relay is located left front of engine compartment, in ECM housing. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire) at wiper relay wiring harness connector. Depending on interval switch position, voltage should be 6-10 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check for open or short in Black/Yellow wire. Repair as necessary. If no problem is indicated, replace wiper switch. Recheck system operation.
  3. Reconnect wiper motor relay connector. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Measure voltage between ground and Green wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. Voltage should vary between zero volts and battery voltage depending on signal received at wiper motor relay terminal No. 1. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check for open or short Green wire between wiper motor and wiper relay. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If no problem is indicated, replace wiper motor relay. Recheck system operation.
  4. Measure voltage between ground and Yellow wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If no problem is indicated, replace wiper switch. Recheck system operation.
  5. Measure resistance between ground and Black wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace wiper motor. Recheck system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between wiper motor and ground. Recheck system operation.
