The Digital Engine Electronics (DME) or Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE) require various input signals for the engine functions. For example, the driver's choice to accelerate or decelerate is picked up at the foot pedals. The engine control unit also needs the brake light switch signal. For vehicles with a manual gearbox, the clutch module sends a signal to the engine control.
