Procedure

NOTE:

Replace the bolts that were tightened with an additional turn.

Replace self-locking nuts and bolts and seals, gaskets and O-rings.

Secure all hose connections with hose clamps of the same type as those equipped by the factory.

When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.

-- Before installing a replacement transmission, always clean out the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler and Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pipes using compressed air (maximum 10 bar).

-- Clean residue from the threaded holes in the cylinder block using a thread tap before installing.

-- When installing a replacement transmission: Install the transmission support, transmission mount and tunnel crossmember in the new transmission; refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .

-- Mount the transmission onto the Gearbox Support T40173 and secure it using the tension strap -1- as illustrated.

CAUTION:

Installing the torque converter incorrectly can cause damage to the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pump drive plate.

Check the installed dimension of the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary, refer to 1.

-- The following preparations must be made before connecting the engine and transmission:

-- Turn the torque converter so that hole next to the notch -arrow- is visible in the lower cut-out in the transmission housing as illustrated.

NOTE:

There is only 1 notch on the circumference; rotate the torque converter as needed.

-- Insert the Clutch Module Transportation Lock T40170 in the transmission housing from below and secure it on the flange shaft -1-.

-- Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary, refer to 1.

-- Coat locking piece -1- with lubricant.

-- Bring the starter -1- with the locking piece -2- into the installed position -4- by supporting the starter on the engine bracket using a plastic or rubber wedge -3-.

NOTE:

In this assembly overview pay attention, that the locking piece are in the correct installed position with the starter, if not the starter support bolts are difficult to install and the locking piece will no longer have its sealing capability.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder Engine:

-- Install the upper starter bolt -2- in the transmission.

-- Install spacer sleeve -arrow- on the bolt -2-.

For all Vehicles

-- Check if the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they are not.

-- Vehicles with a 3.0L TFSI engine: Position the transmission on the engine and tighten the bolts -6 through 11-.

-- Vehicles with a 3.0L TDI Biturbo engine: Attach the transmission to the engine and the tighten the bolts -3, 6 to 11-.

-- Fasten the starter with the bolts -1- and -2- while doing so make sure the locking piece fits correctly.

-- Remove the Clutch Module Transportation Lock T40170.

-- Lift the transmission and tighten the bolts on the tunnel crossmember. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .

-- Loosen the tensioning strap and guide the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6931 with the Gearbox Support T40173 under the transmission.

NOTE:

The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.

-- Press the torque converter -2- against the drive plate -3- slightly in the direction of the -arrow- using an assembly lever -1-.

-- Attach the torque converter to the drive plate as follows:

NOTE:

Use the Torque Wrench 1331 Insert - Open Jaw - 13 mm VAG 1332/14 to tighten.

-- Install the first bolt -arrow- and tighten by hand (2 Nm).

-- Continue turning the crankshaft 180° in the direction of the engine rotation using the Crankshaft Socket T40058 -arrow-.

NOTE:

The 3.0 Liter TFSI engine is shown.

-- With the crankshaft in this position, tighten the bolt -arrow- to 60 Nm.

-- Continue turning the crankshaft 60° and tighten the remaining 5 bolts to 60 Nm.

-- Tighten the remaining engine/transmission connecting bolts.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Install selector lever cable. Refer to INSTALLING .

-- Attach the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Installing the drive axle and drive axle heat shield. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVE AXLE .

-- Install the subframe heat shield. Refer to OVERVIEW - HEAT SHIELD .

-- Install the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pipes to the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler. Refer to OVERVIEW - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF) CIRCUIT .

-- Install the radiator with the fan shroud. Refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the exhaust system. Refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS .

-- Install the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Install the right coolant pipe on the transmission. Refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - RIGHT COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - RIGHT COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [For engine(s) CPNB] Cooling System .

-- Install the driveshaft covers and noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Observe measures after connecting the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

Audi RS6:

WARNING:

Fire danger and danger of damaging without engine cover.

Before closing the front lid, the engine cover must be installed.
Without an engine cover with the front lid closed the vehicle must not be started and must not be driven.

All Vehicles:

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the control modules due to the excess voltage.

Do not use a charger to jump start!

-- Check and adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .

-- Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level and correct if necessary. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF) LEVEL, CHECKING .
