Section 11 (Engine Controls - Removal, Overhaul & Installation): Introduction

CAUTION:
When battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft protection mode. Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from owner prior to servicing vehicle.
CAUTION:
When battery or ECM is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until adaptation systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
NOTE:
While limited diagnostic information is available, vehicle manufacturer does not support diagnostic information using aftermarket scan tools. To properly diagnose vehicle, it is recommended to use VAS 5051 scan tool with VAS 5051/1 adapter cable or VAG 1551 scan tool with 1551/3A adapter cable and VAG 1598/31 test box.
NOTE:
If Engine Control Module (ECM) memory is cleared, battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected, it is necessary to generate a ECM readiness code. See READINESS CODE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
NOTE:
Before replacing any component that scan tool suggests are faulty. Ensure that all wiring connections and harness connectors are okay. Ensure that power and ground circuits are functioning properly. For circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
