Transmission, Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:
Refer to TRANSMISSION, REMOVING for a list of the special tools needed.
After installing a >>new<< transmission, reprogram the immobilizer.
Always replace the needle bearing -arrow- after separating the engine and transmission.
If the needle bearing in the crankshaft is damaged, the gears will no longer shift correctly.
-- Replace the needle bearing in the crankshaft. Refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARING, REPLACING .
-- Transmission pins (not splines) must be lightly lubricated.
-- Make sure both alignment sleeves between the engine and the transmission are correctly seated.
-- Make sure the intermediate plate is seated correctly.
-- Place the transmission with the : 3282 on the : VAS6931 .
-- Place the : VAS6931 under the vehicle. The arrow symbol on the : 3282/42A points in the vehicle direction of travel.
-- Tilt the transmission to the left by adjusting the spindles on the : 3282 . Then lift the transmission.
Pay Attention to the Selector Lever Cable When Lifting the Transmission. Guide the Cable into the Cable Bracket as Early as Possible.
The cable is not lubricated.
Guide the Engine and Transmission Together by Hand until the Engine Flange and Transmission Flange Come into Contact with One Another All Around.
-- Adjust the transmission support until the engine and transmission are >>aligned<<.
-- Turn the crankshaft slightly if necessary.
Be careful not to get any lines caught when installing the transmission.
-- Tighten the bolts -5 to 9- to the tightening specification. Refer to TRANSMISSION TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS .
-- After the transmission was bolted to engine at the bottom, remove the : 3282 from the transmission.
-- Tighten the upper bolts -1, 3, and 10- of the engine/transmission to the tightening specification using the : T10179 . Refer to TRANSMISSION TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS .
The bolt -3- is located in the opening for the starter. Use the : T10061 for this bolt.
-- Align the engine/transmission assembly without tension. Refer to SUBFRAME MOUNT, ADJUSTING .
Install the left transmission mount as follows:
-- Replace all the bolts -1 and 2-.
-- Install the new bolt first hand-tight.
-- Install the bolts -1- in the transmission bracket -A-.
-- The align the engine/transmission in its installation position. To do so, lift it until the transmission bracket is completely touching the transmission mount.
There is a risk of damaging the threads in the transmission bracket by inserting the bolts at an angle.
- Before installing the bolts -2-, the transmission bracket and transmission mount support arm must be absolutely parallel to each other. If necessary, lift the back of the transmission using the Engine and Gearbox Jack.
-- Pry the transmission bracket -A- into the seat using a screwdriver while tightening the bolts -2-.
Only remove : 10-222A when the left and right transmission mount bolts are tightened to the tightening specification.
-- Remove the : 10-222A .
-- Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Connect the connector -A- from the DSG Transmission Mechatronic -J743- as follows.
-- The arrow -D- on the Mechatronic -B- must line up with the connector -A- as well as with the tab -C-.
-- Connect the connector -A- carefully all the way and then turn the lock >>clockwise<< in the direction of -arrow-.
-- Attach the drive axles to the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
AWD Vehicles
-- Install the bevel box if removed. Refer to BEVEL BOX, INSTALLING .
-- Install the driveshaft on the bevel box. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Attach the heat shield -1-. Refer to OVERVIEW - BEVEL BOX .
-- Remove the transmission support from the bevel box and engine.
-- Install the bolts -1 and 2- and tighten. Pay attention to the tightening specification and assembly sequence. Refer to Bevel Box to Transmission and Transmission Support to Engine and Bevel Box .
-- If available, install drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
The right drive axle heat shield is attached with two or three nuts -arrows-.
Vehicles with FWD
-- Install the right transmission flange shaft if removed.
Press the flange shaft against the transmission so that the bolt in the threaded piece of the differential touches.
-- Insert the flange shaft and secure it with bolts.
-- To install the flange shaft push if necessary using a tire iron against the transmission and tighten the bolt using : T10107A .
-- Install the heat shield over the right drive axle, if equipped. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Continuation for All Vehicles
-- Install the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITHOUT STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Attach the pendulum support to the transmission by tightening the bolts -11-. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .
-- Selector lever cable lock washers -arrows- must be replaced.
-- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .
-- Install the charge air pipe. Refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM .
-- Install the coolant hoses on the transmission fluid cooler.
-- Attach the cable bracket to the transmission cover.
-- Install the battery tray and the battery. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the air filter housing:
- Gasoline engine. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Diesel engine. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Install the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Check the coolant level and fill if necessary. Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING .
-- Check the fluid level and fill if necessary. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING .
-- Install the lower section of the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Attach the front wheels. Refer to WHEEL BOLT TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS .
