General Repair Information
- The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repair work.
- Some general repair information that applies to several procedures throughout this information is summarized here. They apply to this repair information.
Special Tools
A list of special tools and workshop equipment required for repair procedures in this information can be found at the beginning of each Repair Group information.
Transmission
- Do not run the engine and do not tow the vehicle if the transmission fluid pan is removed or if there is no transmission fluid inside the transmission.
- When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment sleeves are seated correctly between the engine and the transmission.
- When the transmission is removed, secure the torque converter so that it cannot fall out.
- After installing, check the ATF level and fill. Refer to ATF .

Oil, Environmental and Disposal Regulations
- When handling ATF, handle the gear oil and other fluids with care.
- Dispose of drained transmission fluid correctly.
- Follow all legal environmental and waste disposal regulations.
- Pay attention to the information on the fluid packaging.
O-rings, Gaskets and Seals
- O-rings, gaskets and seals must always be replaced.
- After removing the gaskets and seals, check the contact surface on the housing or shaft for burrs or damage resulting from removal.
- Before installing the gasket, lightly oil and fill the space between the sealing lips -arrow- halfway with Grease.
- The open side of the gaskets point toward the fluid to be sealed in.
- Coat the O-rings with ATF before inserting to prevent the rings from being crushed during assembly.
- Never use any other lubricants in the same areas as the ATF. Otherwise there is a danger of the hydraulic transmission control malfunctioning.
- Check the ATF level after installing. Refer to ATF .
Circlips
- Do not to overstretch the circlips. Replace them if necessary.
- The circlips must rest at the bottom of the groove.
Bolts and Nuts
- Loosen and tighten the bolts and nuts on the covers or housings in a diagonal sequence.
- The tightening specifications given apply to unoiled bolts and nuts.
- Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the bolts that were installed with locking fluid. Insert the bolts with Locking Fluid.
- The threaded holes in which the self-locking bolts or bolts coated with locking fluid were installed must be cleaned (for example, with a thread tap). Otherwise there is the risk that the bolts could break off when they are removed again.
- Always replace self-locking bolts and nuts.
Electrical Components
Due to the build-up of static electricity in the human body, a person can receive an electric shock when metal objects are touched.
This charge can damage the electrical/electronic components of the transmission and the selector mechanism when touching them.
-- Touch a grounded object such as a washer fluid hose or a hoist before working on electrical/electronic components. Do not touch connector terminals or >>open<< electronic components directly.
