Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Lincoln Navigator and 2017 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. 1.

    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist, refer to Jacking and Lifting .

  1. 2.

    Disconnect the battery ground cable, refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables .

  1. 3.

    Remove the fasteners and the underbody splash shield.

  1. 4.

    If equipped, turn the quarter-turn retainers, detach the pushpins and remove the lower air deflector.

  1. 5.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.
    • To install tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

    Open the starter solenoid terminal cover.

    1. 1.

      Remove the large starter solenoid terminal nut and position the wires aside.
      • To install tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

    1. 2.

      Remove the small starter solenoid terminal nut and position the wires aside.
      • To install tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).

  1. 8.

    Remove the transmission cooling tube bracket nut and position the transmission cooling tubes aside.
    • To install tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

  1. 9.

    Remove the starter motor studbolts and remove the starter motor.
    • To install tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

    Inspect the starter motor drive gear and the flywheel ring gear, refer to Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
