Shift Mechanism, Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

-- Replace the gasket on the gearshift housing.

-- Align the shift housing so that is it parallel to the body.

• The distance on both sides to the body must be equal.

-- If necessary, tighten the gearshift housing to the noise insulation.

-- Route the cables -1- from the gearshift mechanism -2- to the transmission as follows:

• The cables must run parallel to each other and must not cross each other.
• The cables must be routed inside the depression in the heat shield -3-.

A clip -A- holds the cables and heat shield to each other in place.

-- Mount the cable bracket on the transmission and tighten the bolts -2- and nuts -1-.

-- Mount the cable bracket on the transmission and tighten the bolts -arrows-.

The holes in the cable retainers have different diameters.

-- Apply a small amount of grease to the pin -arrow- for the gearshift lever -1-.

• Refer to the Parts Information for the grease allocation.

-- Secure the shift cable with new lock washers -1- to the gearshift lever -2-.

-- Lubricate the selector relay lever and gearshift lever. Refer to Selector relay lever: lubricate the following areas very carefully when installing.  and Gearshift lever: lubricate the following areas very carefully when installing. .

-- Install the selector relay lever and the cable retainer together. Refer to Remove and install the selector relay lever together with the cable retainer .

-- Install the selector cable into the cable retainer on the selector relay lever.

-- Adjust the gearshift mechanism. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, ADJUSTING .

-- Install the center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE .

-- Install the boot with the selector knob and if necessary, the noise insulation. Refer to appropriate service information. .

-- Install the heat shield under the gearshift mechanism.

Installing heat shield on Golf and Golf Wagon. Refer to FLOOR HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Installing heat shield on CC, Golf Convertible, Passat and Scirocco. Refer to appropriate service information. .

-- Install the driveshaft on an AWD vehicle. Refer to DRIVESHAFT [For engine(s) CYFB] .

-- Assemble the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS[For engine(s) CYFB] .

-- Install the air filter housing.

-- Install the battery tray, battery and the battery cover. Refer to BATTERY[For engine(s) CYFB] .
