General Information
Transmission
The "automatic transmission 09G" has six hydraulically-controlled forward gears. By passing the torque converter slip, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears become mechanically driven gears when lock-up clutch is closed.
Torque Converter
The torque converter is equipped with a lock-up clutch. The lock-up clutch closes depending on load and speed. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears can be mechanically driven (without slip).
ATF
(Automatic Transmission Fluid)
ATF is a permanent fill. ATF does not need to be changed during maintenance.
The ATF levels inside the planetary gear and inside the final drive are checked and filled at the same time.
Drained ATF must not be used to fill again.
Be very careful when handling transmission fluid. Dispose of drained transmission fluid correctly.
The height of this rising tube corresponds to the height of the ATF level.
To drain, the rising tube is removed.
Use only ATF available as a replacement part in the automatic transmission 09G. Using other fluids can lead to function problems or can even cause transmission failure. For the correct ATF part number, refer to the Parts Information.
Shift Point Changes on Inclines and Declines
Additional gear change maps automatically select the gear changes for gradients depending on the accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed.
- The gear change map for extreme uphill stretches is adapted to engine output
- The gear change map for extreme downhill stretches is adapted to the engine braking effect.
- Direct gear selection via the Tiptronic function also permits utilization of the engine braking effect with a specific gear engaged, for example, on a downhill gradient when towing a trailer.
Guided Fault Finding, OBD and Test Instruments
- Before beginning any repair work on the transmission, determine the exact cause of the damage using "Guided Fault Finding" in the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
