Selector Mechanism With Lever, Through February 2009

NOTE:

After installation, the selector lever cable movement must be checked and adjusted.

Removing

Removing 

-- Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

-- Remove the center console. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- If necessary remove the air filter housing:

-- Remove the selector lever cable from the transmission. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, THROUGH FEBRUARY 2009 .

-- Lift the vehicle.

To remove the selector level cable or the selector mechanism, the heat shield under the selector mechanism must be removed as follows:

CAUTION:

There is a danger of causing damage to the decoupling element.

  • Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
  • Do not load the decoupling element.
  • Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

-- Loosen the nuts for the clamping sleeve -1- and slide the clamping sleeve toward the rear.

-- Remove the front tunnel brace nuts -arrows- and remove the front tunnel brace from the underbody.

-- If necessary remove the exhaust system bracket from the subframe by removing the bolts -arrows- .

-- Tie up the front exhaust pipe with a suitable wire.

-- If equipped, remove the nuts -1- and -2- , and remove the rear tunnel brace.

-- Disengage the center muffler and the rear muffler from the retaining straps -arrows- and tie them to the body with a suitable wire. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system, if necessary.

-- Remove the underbody trim panel nuts -arrows- .

-- Remove the lock washers -2- and -3- .

-- Lower the underbody cover on the inner side just enough until the heat shield -1- for the center tunnel can be removed.

-- Remove the four nuts on the selector mechanism from above.

-- Remove the selector mechanism from below, while doing so do not bend or kink the selector level cable.

Installing 

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following: 

Tightening specifications for the nuts. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM OVERVIEW, THROUGH FEBRUARY 2009 .

-- Insert the selector lever cable into the support bracket on the transmission and carefully push it onto the selector shaft lever. Do not bend the selector shaft lever when doing this, otherwise shifting can no longer be adjusted precisely.

-- Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Engage the selector level cable -1- in the clip -arrow- on the transmission. When routing the selector lever cable to the ATF cooler, maintain a minimum 5 mm space.

-- Install the heat shield -1- under the selector mechanism and attach with the clamping screws -2- and -3- .

-- Attach the underbody trim panel to the body -arrows- . Refer to OVERVIEW - UNDERBODY TRIM PANEL .

-- Install the exhaust system and align free of tension. Refer to [For engine(s) CBTA,CBUA] Description and Operation .

-- Install the tunnel braces under the exhaust system. Refer to OVERVIEW - TUNNEL BRIDGE .

-- Install the center console. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Install the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

-- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

-- Check the selector mechanism. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING .

-- If removed, install the air filer housing.
