Transmission, Removing
Short Description
The transmission is removed individually in a downward direction on this vehicle. The engine remains in the vehicle.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Transmission Support 3282
- Adjustment Plate 3282/49
- Mount 3282/52
- Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
- Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) V.A.G 1332
- Engine-/Gearbox Jack V.A.G 1383 A
- Socket T40058
Procedure
- On vehicles with air suspension, activate the vehicle lift mode. Refer to
- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Removal and Installation
- Remove the noise insulation under the engine and transmission. Refer to "Underbody Impact Guard" in Description and Operation
- Remove the noise insulation bracket angle bracket nuts and bracket -A-.
- Remove the transfer case with the transmission carrier. Refer to Removal and Installation
- Install a floor jack pad -C- to the engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A- and lay a wooden block -B- on top.
- Place the engine-/gearbox holder V.A.G 1383 A- under the transmission.
- Lift the transmission high enough so that the transmission support VW 785/1B- (necessary for removing and installing the transfer case), can be removed from the transmission.
- Then lay a wooden block -A- approximately 50 mm high between the transmission and the subframe.
- Make sure that the wooden block is not lying underneath the transmission fluid lines.
- Lower the engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A- and then move it to the side.
- Remove the catalytic converter and the particulate filter -1- from the turbocharger.
Always replace the nuts on the turbocharger
- Remove the coolant lines from the transmission housing.
- Remove the speed sensor.
- Remove the left heat shield from the transmission.
- Remove the selector lever cable from the ball head -2- and then remove the lock washer -1-.
A removed lock washer may not be reinstalled. Always replace the lock washer.
- Remove the transmission fluid line bolt -arrow- and lines from the transmission.
- Seal off the transmission fluid lines and transmission with clean plugs.
- Remove the bolt for the transmission fluid line bracket from the transmission.
- Disconnect the harness connectors -1 and 3- from the transmission.
- Disconnect the connector -1- from the multifunction transmission range switch -2-.
- Remove the starter. Refer to Removal and Installation
- Assemble the socket T40058- as follows.
- The large diameter -arrow 1- faces the engine.
- The small diameter -arrow 2- faces the adapter.
- Counter hold the crankshaft using the socket T40058- and a box end wrench to loosen the torque converter bolts at the drive plate.
- Remove the 6 torque converter bolts -arrow- through the starter opening: Rotate the crankshaft further with respect to the engine rotation direction.
- Remove the engine to transmission bolts at the top -4 through 6- and at the bottom -8 through 10-. Loosen the bolts -3 and 7- but do not remove them. They stay installed until the transmission is removed.
To remove the transmission, the adjustment plate -3282/49- must be installed on the transmission support -3282-.
- Install the transmission support 3282- onto the engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A-.
- Align the arms of the transmission support so that they match up with the holes in the adjustment plate.
The symbol on the adjustment plate shows the required brackets, the arrow points in the direction of travel.
- Place the engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A- together with the transmission support 3282- under the vehicle.
- Attach the transmission support 3282- arm to the transmission using a M10 x 30 bolt.
- Position the mount 3282/52- under the oil pan flange on the right and left sides of the transmission.
- Lift the transmission and remove the wooden block from between the transmission and the subframe.
- Carefully lower the transmission, the engine touches the bulkhead.
- Remove the remaining engine to transmission bolts.
- Separate the transmission from the engine, and pry the torque converter off of the drive plate.
- After the removal of the transmission, use the bracket 30-211 A- to secure the torque converter against falling out.
