Work sequence
- Connect V.A.G 1551 (VAG 1552) with adaptor cable V.A.G 1551/3.
After connecting Scan Tool (ST):
Depending upon desired function:
- Turn on ignition.
or
- Start engine, see VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING , Table "Selectable functions".
NOTE:
- If display remains blank, check voltage supply for diagnostic connection:
- If display does not indicate as described in work sequence:
See Scan Tool (ST) operating instructions
- If due to an input malfunction "malfunction in data transfer!" is displayed, pull wire off Scan Tool (ST), reconnect and repeat step.
- Operate Scan Tool (ST) and note displayed information:

- Operate Scan Tool (ST) and note displayed information:
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer".
- Press buttons -0- and -1- for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry with -Q- button.
Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 display will show control module identification, e.g.:
- 038906018M Part No. for Control Module (always check with parts department for latest part number)
- 1.9 ltr. Engine displacement
- R4 Engine type (4 Cyl. in -line engine)
- EDC Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
- G00 Equipped with cruise control
- 00 Not equipped with cruise control
- AG Transmission type: Automatic transmission
- SG Manual transmission
- 1813 ECM software
- Coding xxxxx = Coding control module, Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248- codes, see ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J248-, CODING .
- WSC xxxxx = Dealer number from V.A.G 1551, of the dealer that last performed coding. (If the factory coding has not been changed, WSC 00000 appears)
- Press --> button.

- Connect Scan Tool (ST) VAS 5051 using adaptor cable VAS 5051/1 or VAS 5051/3 as follows:
- Push adaptor cable into Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Depending on function:
- Turn on ignition.
- Start engine, see VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING , Table "Selectable functions".
NOTE:
- In functions 04 - Basic setting 08 - Read data block, display zones will be listed from top to bottom.

Select operating mode:
- Press button on display for "Vehicle On Board Diagnostic" -arrow-.
Indicated on display:
Select vehicle system:
- Press buttons -0- and -1- "01 - Engine electronics" on display -arrow-.
On the display the Control Module identification and coding are displayed (for example, see Fig 4)
If coding differs from vehicle version:
- Check Engine Control Module code, see ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) -J248-, CODING
Indicated on display:
Select diagnostic function:
At this point all diagnostic functions are available.
- Press desired function on display.
