Transmission Code Letters, Reading

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle, 2005 Volkswagen New Beetle, and 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

In order to read code letters under plate directly from transmission, engine with transmission must be supported. Transmission plate -1- of left subframe mount must be removed.

When doing this, it is important to lower engine/transmission only far enough until plate can be slid toward rear. If lowered farther, the pendulum support will be damaged.

After reassembly, selector lever cable must be adjusted SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING .

-- First determine whether a coded radio is installed. In this case, determine anti-theft coding.

-- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) cable with ignition switched off Removal and Installation .

-- Remove power steering refill tank from battery plate, do not kink hoses while doing this.

-- Connect refill tank to lock carrier.

-- Remove battery and battery plate Removal and Installation .

-- Disconnect intake hose -1- and connector -2- from Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

-- Do not place adapter 10-222 A /8 on to mounting bolts for fender/front section.

-- If hose and cable connections are found in area of engine lifting eyes for engine support bridge 10-222 A, they must be removed now.

-- If necessary, secure hook of left spindle (on transmission side) via a shackle 10-222 A /12 on engine lifting eyelet.

Do not lift up engine/transmission assembly.

-- Remove hydraulic line -1- from transmission plate -arrow A-.

Bolts must be replaced.

-- Carefully lower engine with transmission via both spindles by 2 rotations, alternating sides.

A maximum of 4 rotations is sufficient in order to remove transmission plate -arrow- toward rear.

After that, transmission code letters can now be read off, reassembly is in reverse order of removal.

NOTE:

Follow all the following instructions.

Replace all bolts of left subframe mount.

First install all new bolts by hand.

-- Bolt transmission plate to transmission and transmission mount with new bolts and tighten to tightening specification.

-- Adjust selector lever cable SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING .
