Install Mercury Label on Vehicles Registered in the States of Vermont, Maine and Connecticut

This is to inform you of an environmental compliance action involving some Volkswagen vehicles that are registered in the states of Vermont, Maine and Connecticut.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

The affected vehicles were sold without a mercury content information label that is required by some state laws. This label is intended, in part, to remind vehicle salvage personnel to remove and properly dispose of any mercury-containing component(s) before the vehicle is scrapped. While tiny amounts of mercury may be incorporated internally in some vehicle components such as xenon headlights, backlit displays and navigation systems, they do not pose a health risk to anyone using the vehicle.

REMEDIAL ACTION

Affix required mercury label.

Each customer notification letter will include one label, and vehicle owners are being asked to affix this label themselves or ask their dealer to do it for them.

In the event you are asked to apply the label, it must be provided by the owner. An owner reply card need not be returned because you update our records when you submit your claim for payment.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS

The vehicles affected by this action are listed separately by state on VESIS and on the VWHub. Please refer to this VIN list to determine whether any vehicles in your inventory are affected.

Please note that the VINs on the list represent the affected vehicles. As this is a label campaign, the VC code will not show on OTIS. The above-mentioned VIN listing can be used as a tool to determine whether or not a particular vehicle requires the corrective work.

NOTE: Volkswagen will not reimburse under this action any duplicate repair work or a repair outside the VIN list.

LIMITATION OF SALE OR LEASE OF CERTAIN VEHICLES

It is imperative that any vehicle in your new or used car inventory affected by this action is corrected prior to delivery for sale or lease.

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING

Volkswagen will notify all known owners of affected vehicles directly by first class mail on or about May 18, 2005. Each notification letter will include one information label, installation instructions and a postage-paid "Owner Reply Card." Owners will be asked to affix this label themselves or seek the help of an authorized Volkswagen dealer. A sample copy of the owner letter is attached for your information.

VEHICLE ALLOCATION

There will be no vehicle allocation list issued for this action.

PARTS INFORMATION

A replacement mercury label, part number 1K0 010 467 T, will be supplied with each owner notification letter. You will also receive ten (10) of these labels that can be used for your in-stock vehicles affected by this action. Additional mercury labels will be available at no charge through Resolve at (800) 544-8021. You must provide the VIN of the vehicle that requires the mercury label.

TIME REQUIREMENTS/ REIMBURSEMENT

To ensure prompt and proper payment, be sure to enter, immediately upon completion of the repair work, the reimbursement code listed below. As this is a label campaign, the VC code will not show on OTIS, but claims will only be paid for vehicles with an open VC code in OTIS on the day of repair.
