Calling Up Instrument Cluster Check Mode
Electronic components and instrument sin the instrument cluster must match the appropriate vehicle equipment. The electronic unit in each instrument cluster has an integrated test facility which can be interrogated to check whether the installed instrument cluster is equipped with the correct electronic components and instruments to ensure that the vehicle specific input signals are processed properly and shown in the display. This check mode for the instrument panel can be used for troubleshooting and should be interrogated in all cases of complaints concerning the function of the instrument cluster.
Calling up check mode:
- Switch ignition on.
- Press trip recorder knob.
- Keep trip recorder knob depressed and switch ignition off and then on again.
The selected function number and data appear in the display in the speedometer. By repeatedly pressing the trip recorder knob the functions listed in the Instrument Cluster Function Numbers table can be called up one after the other.
| Function number | Function | Engine Code Letters 2.0L, ABA |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Distance impulse number | Model years 1992 to 94: manual transmission = 3838 auto. transmission = 3795 As of model year 1995: manual transmission = 3862 auto. transmission = 3819 |
| 2 | Country version code | O |
| 3 | Speedometer/Tachometer code | Only needed for production control, not for troubleshooting |
| 4 | Number of cylinders | 4 |
| 5 | Segment test | all segments are visible |
| 6 | Impulse from vehicle speed sensor | 7 impulses are counted per wheel revolution and added to counter total. Display ranges from 0 to 9999 |
| 7 | RPM display | Displayed is momentary engine speed |
| 8 | Program version | Only needed for production control, not for troubleshooting |
- Distance impulse number:
- If the indicated value does not agree with the distance impulse number on the chart, the distance is calculated incorrectly.
- The distance impulse number is a constant, engine specific value with which the driven distance can be calculated.
Example: Distance impulse number (from chart) x distance driven - 3838 x 0.5 km = 1919 distance impulse.
- By switching off ignition, the test mode is switched off.
