Fox 1.8L Digifant I (California)
- Connect Scan Tester (VAG 1551) to Data Link Connectors (DLC) located in center console. Turn ignition on. With scan tester in READ MEASURING VALUE BLOCK function, read intake air temperature value in channel No. 2 of scan tester.
- If displayed temperature is approximately ambient temperature, sensor circuit is okay. If display temperature is -40°F (-40°C), check for an open intake air temperature sensor circuit using next step. If display value is 212°F (100°C) minimum, check for a short circuit to battery voltage using step 4).
- Disconnect airflow sensor. Using test leads from Adapter Kit (VW 1594), jumper sensor wiring harness terminals No. 1 and 4. Scan tester displayed value must be 212°F (100°C) minimum. If displayed value is correct, replace sensor. If displayed value is incorrect, check sensor wiring harness for an open circuit.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor. Using test leads from adapter kit, measure ECT sensor resistance. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE table under COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.
- If sensor resistance is incorrect, replace intake air temperature sensor. If sensor resistance is correct, check intake air temperature sensor wiring harness for a short circuit to battery voltage. If wiring harness is okay, replace Electronic Control Module (ECM). After replacing ECM, perform ECM REFERENCE SETTING procedure.
