Steering Column: Removal
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove steering wheel. See Volkswagen in Steering Wheel & Column Switches article in this section.
- Remove bolt and screw from switch housing recess. Tilt switch unit toward instrument panel. Pry off spacer sleeve on steering column.
- Pull up switch unit to disconnect wires. Remove switch unit from column. Disconnect steering shaft from universal joint shaft. Disconnect brake pedal push rod.
- Separate clutch pedal from actuating cable under instrument panel. Push down leaf spring retainer clip with a screwdriver and disengage it from mounting slot.
- Remove bolts retaining column under instrument panel. Punch and drill out shear bolts. Pull column assembly from vehicle.
