Removal & Installation: Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground strap and starter cable at battery. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission. Remove 2 upper engine-to- transmission attaching bolts. Loosen left side transmission mount. Install support fixture (10-222).
  2. Remove rear transmission mounting bolts (5). Mark axle drive shafts for reassembly reference, and disconnect from final drive flanges. Remove starter bolts and position starter out of the way.
  3. Remove transmission protection plate and converter cover plate, then remove drive plate-to-torque converter bolts. Place selector lever in "P" position and disconnect selector cable from transmission, then disconnect accelerator and pedal cables from bracket.
  4. Support transmission with fixture (US 4470) attached to engine hoist. Remove left side engine/transmission mount. Detach side carrier and mount from transmission. Remove front mount. Remove lower transmission-to-engine bolt. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolt. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Lift transmission slightly and, taking care not to allow converter to drop, lower transmission from vehicle.
